What we walked into
The slab had spent its life as a garage floor. Adhesive residue in patches where something had been stuck down, staining across most of the bay, and a rough concrete stem wall along one side that had never been meant to be looked at. The conversion was finished around it. Walls painted, garage door still in place.
What we did
Ground the slab back to take off the adhesive and open the surface, then repaired where it needed it. A clear epoxy went down over the top in a satin finish. Nothing pigmented, so the natural colour of the concrete and the aggregate near the surface both stay visible.
What made it difficult
A clear coat hides nothing. Every repair has to be finished to a standard you would be happy to look at, because you will be looking at it. On a pigmented floor a patch disappears. Here it does not, so the preparation takes longer than the coating.
The result
A floor that reads as concrete rather than as a coating. Satin rather than gloss, which suits a room people live in.
