What we walked into
A slab with old coating residue worked into it in swirls, the kind left when something was rolled on years ago and never came off properly. Bigger than a standard two car bay, and open to the rest of the lower floor.
What we did
Two of the crew on a large planetary grinder to take the residue back to clean concrete, which is what most of the four days went on. Then a light primer coat, and a solid charcoal topcoat finished matte rather than gloss.
What made it difficult
Matte is harder than gloss. A high gloss coat flows out and hides small variations in how it was laid. A matte finish shows roller marks and lap lines if the wet edge is lost, so on 600 sqft it has to be laid in one continuous pass by people who are not going to stop halfway.
The result
A dark, even floor with no shine to bounce the garage lighting back at you. Charcoal hides tyre marks better than a pale colour, which matters more in a garage than in a room.
