What we walked into

New construction, drywall up but not taped, and a slab that had been poured in more than one go. One section sat lower than the rest and had already been brought up with a levelling compound before we arrived.

What we did

Ground the whole floor including the levelled section so both took the coating the same way, then poured a silver pewter metallic. The coating runs up the base and finishes against a trim line rather than dying into the drywall.

What made it difficult

Metallic over two different substrates. The original slab and the levelling compound absorb differently, and metallic pigment moves according to what is under it, so a patch that is invisible on a solid colour will read as a change in the swirl. It took an extra day to prime the two areas to the same porosity before pouring.

The result

A floor with real depth and movement in it, in a room that will mostly hold a car. Worth doing when the garage is visible from the house.
