What we walked into
A slab that had been patched in several places with levelling compound, leaving pale areas against darker original concrete. A set of three concrete steps ran up to the door into the house, and a water heater stood in the corner on its own plinth.
What we did
Hand ground the areas the large machine could not reach, which on a floor with steps and a plinth in it is most of the edges. Then a full flake broadcast in a mid grey mix, taken up the steps including the treads and the risers, and coved at the wall base.
What made it difficult
Steps. Every tread is an edge and every riser is a vertical surface, and flake does not stay on a vertical the way it stays on a floor. The steps take as long as a good part of the floor and they are the part everyone touches.
The result
A garage floor and a set of steps in the same finish, so the transition into the house reads as one surface instead of a coated floor and bare concrete stairs.
