What we walked into
A modern house with full height glazing down one side and a stone clad feature column through the living space. The floor had to work against a lot of natural light and a lot of hard surfaces already in the room.
What we did
Prepared the slab and poured a charcoal metallic with white worked through it, then finished it matte rather than gloss. The white movement is heaviest where the daylight lands and settles down as it moves away from the glass.
What made it difficult
Glass. A high gloss metallic opposite floor to ceiling windows turns into a mirror, and in a living room that means glare rather than depth. Taking the sheen down to matte keeps the movement in the floor visible without the room reflecting itself back.
The result
A floor with genuine depth that does not fight the daylight. Matte metallic reads more like polished stone than like a coating, which is the right answer in a room people sit in.
