What we walked into

A restaurant nearly ready to open. Dark walls, a red feature wall, and a bar already built and fitted with its brass foot rail. The floor was the last thing to go in, which meant everything else in the room was finished and vulnerable.

What we did

Wrapped and taped the bar to its full height, ground the slab, and poured a dark pewter metallic through the dining area and around the bar base. Cut in by hand along the length of the bar rather than running a machine near it.

What made it difficult

Protection. When the joinery is already in and the paint is already on, the risk on a grinding job is not the floor, it is everything else in the room. Most of the first day went on masking rather than on concrete.

The result

A dark metallic floor that picks up the red wall and the lighting, finished tight to the base of the bar with no gap and no damage to the joinery above it.
