What we walked into
A bare slab with the shopfit already set out on it in chalk lines, patchy in tone across the space and marked from the construction that had come before us.
What we did
Ground the slab down far enough to open up the aggregate and even out the tone, then polished it. Going deeper than a light cut is what removes the patchiness – it also exposes the stone, which is what gives this floor its character.
What made it difficult
Retail floors are looked at closely and from every angle, and the aggregate has to come up evenly or the exposure looks accidental rather than intended. Cutting to a consistent depth across 12,000 sqft is what makes that work.
The result
An exposed-aggregate polished floor with the ceiling downlights carrying across it in rows. Hard-wearing enough for a pet shop and nothing laid on top to scratch or lift.
