What we walked into
Broken flagstone piled across the rooms where the old floor had been lifted, with the bedding mortar still stuck to the slab underneath in a thick uneven layer.
What we did
Cleared the broken stone, ground the mortar bed off, and polished the slab underneath through the living space and down the hallway.
What made it difficult
Mortar-bedded stone leaves far more behind than tiled flooring does. The bed sits thick and uneven, and all of it has to come off before the slab is even visible – the demolition took longer than the polishing.
The result
A pale, smooth floor running continuously through the house and down the corridor, in a room that started under a pile of broken stone.
