What we walked into
A converted loft with board-formed concrete columns and steel-framed windows, and a slab that had gone almost black with staining across most of its area.
What we did
Cut through the staining and polished the slab, keeping the finish darker rather than pushing for a light floor. In a loft with raw concrete structure already on show, a pale floor would have fought the building.
What made it difficult
Deciding how far to go. Grinding deeper would have lightened it further, but the mottling is what makes this floor sit with the columns and the windows, so the cut was stopped at the point where it read as character rather than damage.
The result
A dark, mottled polished floor with real depth in it, reflecting the window line across the space and matching the raw concrete structure around it.
