What we walked into
A heavily contaminated slab. Mottled brown and grey across the whole floor, black staining in patches, old mastic residue and cracking – the kind of surface most people assume has to be covered rather than saved.
What we did
Took the slab down far enough to get past the staining and into sound concrete, then rebuilt the finish from there through the grits. On a floor this contaminated the early passes are the whole job; once it is uniform, the polishing is straightforward.
What made it difficult
Contamination does not sit at an even depth. Some of the staining came off in the first pass and some of it went deeper than expected, so the cut had to be judged section by section rather than set once and run across the floor.
The result
A clean, reflective floor with the ceiling lights carrying down its length – from a slab that looked like a write-off. It was papered over afterwards to protect it while the fit-out finished.
