What we walked into
A green epoxy floor that had failed. Not worn, failed. It had delaminated in sheets across the traffic areas and around the trench drains, leaving bare slab in patches and loose edges everywhere else. A coating that lifts in a kitchen is not only a maintenance problem, it is somewhere for water to sit under the surface.
What we did
Took the old coating off entirely and ground the slab back to sound concrete. Recoated in a light grey solid colour with an anti-slip aggregate broadcast into it, and ran the coating up the wall base as a cove so there is no square internal corner for anything to collect in. The trench drains were cut back in cleanly at the new surface level.
What made it difficult
The fixed stainless equipment does not move. The kettles are plumbed and sit on legs bolted to the slab, so every one of them had to be wrapped, taped and worked around rather than lifted out. Coating up to and around a fixed leg without leaving a ridge is slow.
The result
A continuous grey floor with a coved base, laid to the drains, that can be hosed down. The anti-slip is in the coating rather than on top of it, so it does not wear off the traffic lanes first.
