What we walked into
Nineteen hundred square feet of commercial office in Van Nuys, storefront glazing down one side and a slab that had gone patchy and dark under whatever had covered it.
What the client needed
A polished floor that worked with a glass frontage, which means every flaw is lit from the side all day.
What we did
We ground the slab back and filled what the covering had left behind, then took the polish up through the grits. Side light from a storefront shows every inconsistency, so the flat work matters more here than it does in a room lit from above.
What made it difficult
The floor was split across several separate offices rather than one open space. Every room you add is more perimeter, and perimeter is edge work done by hand with a smaller machine. It is slow and there is no way around it, but it is the difference between edges that match the field and edges that give the job away.
The result
A polished grey floor that holds up under raking daylight, with the glazing reflected clean down its length. Eight days, no coating on top.
