What we walked into
A reception area part-way through fit-out, with the stone-topped counter already set and the restroom fitted. The slab was grey and unremarkable, which is the easiest kind to work with.
What we did
Polished the slab around the installed millwork, cutting in by hand at the counter base and the door thresholds where the machine could not reach.
What made it difficult
Once the joinery is in, it sets the boundaries. The counter cannot be moved, so the floor underneath and around it has to be finished from the outside in, and the hand-worked edge has to match the machine-polished middle exactly.
The result
A clean, even floor running under and around the counter, bright enough to lift a windowless reception space.
