What we walked into

A stage floor painted black, as stage floors usually are, over a slab that had taken years of set builds and rigging. The transition between the painted area and the bare concrete is visible in the early photos as a hard line across the middle of the space.

What we did

Ground the black paint off and kept going into the slab, then polished it up. The space is a single open span with roll-up doors along one side, so the passes could run long and straight once the coating was off.

What made it difficult

Stage paint does not come off evenly. It sits in the surface rather than on top of it, so the first passes fight patches that release at different rates, and getting the whole 13,000 sqft to the same starting point took longer than the polishing that followed.

The result

One open polished floor across the full arena, bright enough to pick up the rigging lights overhead, with the columns and stage end reading cleanly against it.
